An afternoon at the park

Yesterday was beautiful! It was the first sunny day that actually felt warm. Ben and I decided that we needed to get out and take advantage of the bright sun, warm temps, and blue sky. We packed up our picnic gear, stopped by the grocery store, then headed to a nearby park for the afternoon. It was glorious. We ate lots of tasty food (red peppers, tomato, salami, creamy french cheese, strawberries), did some reading, and also snuck in a nap:)

I recently picked up this maxi skirt at Anthro. This is my very first maxi skirt/dress (ever)! I have been wanting to give the maxi trend a try and when I saw the seamingly maxi, I knew it was the one:) I love the purple stripes and "swingy godets" (anthro's description) at the bottom of the skirt. The purple motif is no longer available online, but there are still some floating around stores.

I'm reading Stolen Lives by Malika Oufkir right now. I'm only about 80 pages into it, but so far, so good. I love memoirs and I'm really enjoying this one.

Top: Anthropologie
Skirt: Anthropologie Seaminly Maxi
Shoes: Dansko

Throwing on this cute little top was perfect for a picnic, but I really have no idea how to style this skirt. Like I mentioned, this is my first ever maxi skirt and I really don't own a lot of stripes. Help! Please share some tips/ideas with me on how to style this lovely skirt. Should I go with a long top and then belt my waist? Maybe tuck in a simple tank top and throw a cardi on top? Would a more structured top in a solid color work?

Hope your weekend was fabulous!

  1. What a perfect day! I love love picnics. And it is gorgeously green there! I think you got it right on the skirt, i think balance is the trick with maxi anything. you don't want to look like a pioneer so it is smart to balance it with a tank.

  4. I got this skirt on my NYC trip earlier this month, and the PS recommended the first hints blouse with it, which I bought and love. My skirt is at the tailor's right now, but ohhhhh, seeing it on you makes me want it NOW!

  5. Picnics in parks are a treat, especially when the weather is so bright and sunny. These are such glorious pictures.
I've don't own any maxi skirts out of fear that they might swamp me. I like how you wore yours. I'd love to see you try pairing it with a plain coloured tank tucked it and maybe a brown belt? I'm sure you could come up with fab ways to wear it!

  7. I'm so glad you guys got out in that lovely weather. I spend nearly the whole day in the yard where I weeded, planted and yes, snuck in a nap. Great styling of the maxi skirt - they can be difficult and you did fabulously.

  8. What a lovely way to enjoy a sunny day! The grass hasn't turned green here yet and it's raining cats and dogs!

I have never owned anything maxi either, and I just recently bought a maxi tank dress from H&M. I'm thinking I might like a skirt as well. This one looks fantastic on you and I think you did a find job styling it. You'll come up with more combinations as the spring goes on :)

  12. love the way the stripes move with the gored detail at the bottom. I'd say all of your suggestions should work! I like the lace detail in the t-shirt and how that works with the stripes.
